Deaf Women & Girls: Advocating for Rights and Inclusion
A project for FEDWEN
An impact story exploring how FEDWEN advocates for Deaf women and girls through accessible health education, SRHR and disability inclusion in Kenya.
The Story
How do Deaf women and girls access information, services and opportunities when communication itself becomes a barrier?
For Deaf adolescents and young women in Kenya, access to sexual and reproductive health information is not only a health issue. It is also a question of language, accessibility, inclusion and the right to make informed decisions.
FEDWEN advocates for the rights, recognition and inclusion of Deaf women and girls, with a particular focus on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
Through advocacy and accessible health education, the organisation works to ensure that Deaf women and girls are included in conversations and decisions affecting their lives.
Our Approach
As part of Spread Your Mission — Season One, Emerge Lens partnered with FEDWEN to tell the story of its advocacy for Deaf women and girls.
Our storytelling challenge was to make an issue that can often be discussed in policy and development language understandable through the experiences of the people it affects.
Rather than presenting disability inclusion as an abstract concept, we focused on the importance of access to information, communication and the ability to participate in decisions about one’s own health and future.
The intention was to help audiences understand not only what FEDWEN advocates for, but why accessible information and inclusive services matter.
The Film
A short documentary exploring how FEDWEN advocates for the rights of Deaf women and girls in Kenya, particularly through sexual and reproductive health rights, accessible education and disability inclusion.
